Karen was involved in an experiment to test whether communication recieved in the seance is indeed from the spirit world, or something which we can create within our own minds. Read below to discover Karen's group findings.

The character creation ....

This was the very first meeting, which was more about creating the character and filling in the relevant paperwork.

Initially we filled out the following :-

Australian Sheep / Goat Scale - talks about your personal beliefs, such as psychic experiences, ESP, psycho kinesis (PK), contact with spirits.

Transliminality Scale - about personal experiences such as imagination, rituals and mystical experiences.

Group Cohesion Scale - about personal feelings about the group, how the group manages to communicate and make decisions

States of Mind Scale - about your state of mind such as tiredness and confidence

Feelings at the Moment Scale - about your personal condition, such as depression, energy levels and alertness.

Consent Form

Five Factor Model - about personal character, such as artistic, organisation, tenseness, kindness and laziness.

We then went onto form our character :-

Alfred Smith

A man who was born in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, in 1989, before the first world war, and enlisted into the army.

Following the end of the war he returned back to Bognor, married his childhood sweetheart, Mary, and moved into their own home.  They both worked in the laundry until Mary had their first child - Alfred Jr.

They went on to have another male child, Edward, and then a female - Elizabeth.  The fourth baby (female) was stillborn.

Following the war, Alfred became ill due to Mustard Gas poisoning, over a period of a few years his illness became worse until he had to give up work at the laundry and Mary returned to work in his place. 

When he passed over at the age of 34, his children were aged 9, 8 and 6.

We then discussed the items which we would require for each of the experimental sessions to follow on.  This included items such as a round table, glass, tape recorder, video recorder, 3 coins EMF meter, and temperature gauge.

The beginnings ....

To start off we read through all the information about the experiments again.

We filled in the Group Cohesion Scale, States of Mind Scale and Feelings at the Moment Scale.

We spent 3 minutes meditating, or sitting to quiet the mind and relax before starting off.

Personally, I was feeling a little tired as I had experienced a busy few days rushing around, I was also a little sad, but nothing too serious!

To start proceedings off I opened the circle with a short request to spirit, asking for protection and stating that we were meeting to try and connect with Alfred Smith

We read through the personal details of Alfred so we were all very aware of his life and then commenced the séance.

Séance 1

We all asked for Alfred to let us know that he was present among us by either making noises, changing the temperature, touching one of us, moving the table or the 3 coins (trigger objects we had drawn round and placed on the mantelpiece).  After about 10 minutes with nothing happening, we then decided to try using the glass.

After a while this did start to move.  This was very slight movement to start with and personally did not appear to be very conclusive - I always want good proof of movement, especially with glasses.  The glass did start moving a bit more, although still quite slowly. We established this was a connection with a female - possibly a nun, but not a lot else was really confirmed.

After 30 minutes we stopped and filled in the questionnaires again.

Séance 2

We decided to start straight off with the glass, as this had given us some response previously.  We asked Alfred to let himself known by moving the glass, or creating any other phenomena (as above).

Nothing really happened apart from a couple of members talking about experiencing a breeze and a hand on their shoulder.

After 3 minutes we stopped, filled in the questionnaires again, and concluded the evening.

Conclusion

We didn't really experience anything much at all in this first session.  The glass moved, but was not overly conclusive with results about the spirit who was trying to communicate (if at all).

Personally, I don't feel that we had any sort of link at all with our invented character.

and so it continues ....

Following the questionnaires, short meditation and the opening of the circle, we started the first session with glass moving.

I was full of energy ready for this session and was quite looking forward to what we might see.

Séance 1

We asked for Alfred to make himself known by moving the glass.  After a while we had nothing to report at all, so we asked for other spirits who might have known Alfred to also come forward.  Again this initiated no response and we stopped after 30 minutes with nothing to report.

Séance 2

We decided to concentrate on table tilting and noises / lights / temp. changes.

We asked Alfred to make himself known through all of these methods, but once again there was nothing much to report at all.

The only thing I experienced all evening was s breeze which came under my hands for a short period.  There were no temperature changes in the room but one member of the circle did experience feeling really cold and even had Goosebumps up her arms to prove it!  We asked Alfred to send this cold feeling to someone else as well and this happened. 

Conclusion

No sign of Alfred coming forward at all.  Very little phenomena experienced. Just a feeling of coldness at one point. 

and so it continues ....

I was feeling quite tired when I arrived for this session.  It was a hot evening, and we were all quite relaxed.  1 member of the circle was missing for this session.

We started with the questionnaires, a short meditation and the opening of the circle as we do for each session.

Séance 1

We decided to concentrate on glass moving for this session.  We asked constantly for Alfred or members of his family to make themselves known by moving the glass - or the trigger objects (some coins on the table) taping or raping, or touching one of us.

There was absolutely no movement of the glass whatsoever. I personally didn't experience a single thing.

1 member of the circle noticed a shadow cross over a plant in the room, and another experienced an uncomfortable feeling over one side of her chest and back, so much so she had to stand to ease the pain.  This then went again.

Séance 2

Once more decided to do glass moving, as well as ask for movement elsewhere in the room by noises, lights, breezes etc.

We experienced absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the séance!  I did however pick up a relation of someone in the group who was asking if we could play chess instead!!

Conclusion

There appeared to be even less than the previous session on this one!  Nothing was noted apart from my clairvoyant link with one person in spirit.  I think maybe spirit are keeping as far away as possible from this experiment, to prove that they are real!!!!

and so it continues ....

Once again I was not feeling on quite top form when I arrived for this evenings experiment.  But still looking forward to seeing what would happen and any sorts of connections we might make.

One member of the group was missing due to other commitments.

Séance 1

We decided to concentrate on glass moving for this séance and after the usual 3 minute meditation, opening of the circle and read through of the information about Alfred Smith we set about asking him or members of family to come forward and speak to us through the glass.

The whole séance was pretty uneventful, apart from at one stage the glass moved from the centre of the table to the edge but then stopped.  We asked for the glass to be moved back to the centre but this just didn't happen.

At one stage another member of the group experienced pains to the centre of the chest a couple of times when we had asked if anyone else was around who might be able to help us.

Séance 2

This session was even more uneventful than the first!  There was no movement whatsoever of the glass. We even tried it on the floor rather than on the table - just for a change!

At one point we talked about the pains in the chest which had occurred in the first séance and asked if that was from spirit for them to come back again.  This they did and the pains were once again felt.

After the Experiment

I was not expecting have a section about after the experiment, but I just have a feeling that these experiences should be noted also.

We were talking about nothing much happening and discussing the fact that as we believed in spirit we might subconsciously not be wanting a fictional character to come through and this then may then stop the glass from moving.

When partaking in the experiment, I try not to open up too much on a mediumship level, and therefore avoid any clairsentience I may get.  I was very aware of a male connected to the Catholic church (had a feeling of some sort of priest or father), and also a young girl.

I was talking about this young girl who was running around the room and saying that I wasn't sure if she was about 4 or 5 years old when suddenly something just appeared in thin air and fell to the floor, hitting the table on the way.  There was absolutely nowhere this could have come from and when we searched on the floor where I had seen it drop there was a 5p coin!  Confirmation of her being 5???

and so it continues ....

For once I arrived at this session feeling very lively and raring to go! 

I was looking forward to this evenings session and hoping that we would eventually start getting to see some movement.

Two people were away due to other commitments, leaving just myself and one other.

Séance 1

We decided to concentrate on glass moving again for the first séance, and after the usual 3 minute meditation, opening of the circle, and read through about Alfred Smith we asked for Alfred or other members of the family to come forward and let themselves be known.

We had absolutely nothing happen throughout this session, apart from at one point where we asked for anyone to come forward, the other sitter felt cold down one side and had goosebumps on the arm.  We checked the area with the temperature gun, but this didn't show any changes.

Séance 2

We decided to try and concentrate on table tipping, or taps / raps around the room for this second session.

We asked often for someone to come forward but nothing at all!!  We did have a laugh and spoke a lot to try and raise energies, with talking and the silence etc. but this didn't appear to help either.

After the Experiment

Another odd thing happened just outside of the experimental session again on this day.  On the way to the sitting my mobile telephone was work absolutely fine. When I got to the house I wanted to input a number into the memory, but each time I pressed either 0 or 8 it would only appear as a 5.  In the end we decided to write the number on a piece of paper instead.

When leaving the house, this was still happening, but the moment I stepped back inside my own home the numbers all started working absolutely fine again!  Strange?  I am starting to wonder about the significance of the number 5!

It almost seems that nothing will happen during the experiment where we are looking at the mind influencing movement in séance conditions, but then spirit are letting us know they are still around outside of the experimental times.

But the way, with regards to the 5p from the last session, when another member of the group returned home she also found a 5p sitting at the edge of the table by her bed!!

and so it continues ....

We were back to three people again for this session

Séance 1

Once again we decided to concentrate glass moving for this séance, as we always seem to get more success in this than other things when doing this on investigations.  The glass started doing a slight rocking / tapping movement but wouldn't move at all apart from this.

There was nothing else that happened at all

Séance 2

We had the same slight rocking / tapping motion as we had in the previous séance, but this again was all.  We did test the glass right at the beginning to see if this motion was to do with the actual table and glass but we couldn't get it to make this movement at all.  It was only once we had got properly going that this would occur.

Conclusion

Nothing much to report at all.  Rocking of glass which could be due to a build up of energy by concentrating on the glass, but certainly nothing paranormal, or any sign of contacting Alfred.

and so it continues ....

After the lack of anything happening in the previous session I really went along to this one expecting much of the same!  There was again three of us in attendance.

Before we started the strange thing was that the temperature gun kept telling us that it was 50+ degrees in the room - which it obviously wasn't.  I don't think this was anything paranormal - just it not working properly though!

Séance 1

Again we decided to do a glass moving experiment.  We checked the glass before starting for any way we could make it do the rocking movement on the table.  We couldn't achieve this at all, but once again as soon as we really got started the glass started to do the same movement.

The glass was just moving in the rocking motion and not sliding across the table so we asked for Alfred or anyone who could help us to find him to make some noises - raps or bangs. I was quite surprised when we got a rap in response from the corner of the room.

To make sure this was happening in response to the question, I asked for a rap to be made on the opposite side of the room, this then happened in the opposite corner.  I then asked for a rap on the ceiling, and we definitely received a noise from above.

The strange thing was that when we asked for a rap the glass stopped moving and once the noise had sounded the glass started to move again - almost as if moving away from the glass to make a noise and returned once again afterwards. 

We weren't able to build up to a proper conversation, which I was hoping we might be able to do in the second séance as we ran out of time.

Séance 2

This séance was pretty much the same as the first, but with not quite as much success.  We were receiving raps but not seeming to be so definitely in response to asking for them.

Conclusion

A bit more success than we have had previously.  It was good to start getting some raps around the room and from the places we had asked for.  Hopefully we may be able to build on this to eventually contact Alfred??

and so it continues ....

We were back to our original four people for this session; and it certainly seemed to make a difference.  I was feeling quite lively and ready to enjoy a good session, hoping we might be able to build on the raps we had managed to before.

We also decided to add in another factor for this session.  We all sat and drank a glass or two of wine during the session.

Séance 1

After a while of asking for Alfred or anyone who knew him to come forward the glass did start to move around.  For some strange reason we got the giggles an lot during this session, but I think we were probably picking up on the energies of the spirit child who was communicating through the glass.

We established that this a young boy of...  you guessed it!  5.  Just coincidence after all our experiences of the number 5 over the past couple of months??  He talked about playing on the area of where the house is built and living locally in one of the cottages.  Strangely he also confirmed that he was born in 1898 - the year n which our character Alfred is mean to have been born.  We had a name beginning with V for him, and he agreed that he was to do with the appearance of the 5p's and the mobile phone problem.

It was wonderful to actually get some responses and to be able to talk to someone, but we certainly hadn't got Alfred or one of his relatives - I am wondering though if he is meant to have known Alfred at all - perhaps we might find out at some point?

Séance 2

Once again the glass started to move, but this time one of the group received a more personal message, which wasn't related to the young boy or Alfred.

Conclusion

A much more exciting and interesting evening.  It was great fun and we all laughed loads.  Most of the time I think this has a large impact on glass moving, as the only times I ever see this start to work is when there has been laughter.  How certain we can be about the spirit boy coming through I'm not sure, but we are starting to get links with the number 5 and the year of our character's birth?

and so it continues ....

Again there was the four of us present and ready for a good night.  The other three were quite tired, but I was feeling very lively.

Séance 1

This was a bit of a strange séance as the glass was moving for us after requesting Alfred to come forward and contact us through the glass.

Each time the glass would only move towards one member of the group and not in any other direction.  We had no confirmation as to who was moving the glass or why as we couldn't get a proper conversation going. The glass wouldn't move back to the centre just stayed moving back to the same member of the group.

Séance 2

Not much movement here of the glass, just the odd movement towards the same member of the group.

Conclusion

Although in the this séance we did experience the glass moving there was no conclusive evidence that this was Alfred (our character) or indeed any other specific spirit person.

and so it continues ....

We were back down to 3 people again on this session, but the person who the glass was attracted to last time we sat was present.  I was feeling quite tired as I had been on a few overnight paranormal investigations and a couple of weekend workshops and still not been able to catch up on some much needed sleep.

As we were all quite tired we decided to have a bit of a change and just do a straight hour, instead of taking a break in the middle after half an hour.  We also decided to have a change by turning off the main lights and carrying out the experiment by candlelight.

Séance

Within seconds of each person touching the glass and asking for Alfred or anyone you could help us to contact him to draw close and move the glass for us the glass moved across the table.

Within a short while we had managed to glean the following information:

Name - Bill

Passing Age - 9 years

Wearing - Grey school uniform style, shorts and jumper.  Burgundy red sandals.

Passing Date - 1930's

Passing Conditions - Was with his father when he passed over - some sort of sudden death.

Reason for coming - Was looking for his father as when he had passed over to spirit side he had lost him.  Was grounded and wanted to be moved on.  Not too happy where he was at the moment.

Other info - Each time he talked about wanting to move on he would move the glass towards me, each other time he would move the glass towards the same person he moved the glass towards last time we sat. (he confirmed that he had been here last time as well)  He talked about a Mary being also present in the room and that Mary was a spirit guide.  My instinct tells me that Mary had been looking after him until he got the chance to meet up with his father again.  As there did appear to be some confusion as to exactly who she was.

After this, I kept getting the urge to do some table tilting instead of glass moving.  This was then backed up was the glass would move very slowly to the edge of the table and then gradually tip off the side- almost as if I want to do something else and no longer want the glass??

Within a couple of minutes of increasing the energy around the table, it moved straight across the floor.  This was very exciting as it was so much more than we had managed to experience previously in this experiment. We asked the table to move back, and this is exactly what it did.  It then moved with some force towards the same person who the glass had kept moving to previously.  We managed to also establish that this person reminded him of his father, which was why he was draw specifically towards him.

After also getting the table to tilt onto it's side a couple of times - further than it would naturally be able to hold (due to gravity) we decided to close down the circle so I could work with my guides on finding his father and moving him onwards.

Conclusion

A really enjoyable evening and some excellent spirit communication.  Although this was not our fictional character or linked to him, we had experienced glass moving and table tilting to establish communication with the spirit world.

The longer we do this experiment the more convinced I am that true spirit will always shine through before any personally created entity with the power of the mind.

and so it continues ....

Again there was the four of us present and ready for a good night.  After our experiences from the last time we sat, we were really hoping to start getting more things happening, but also linking into our character, Alfred.

We had also decided to work in a darkened room with candle light again, as we had on the last session.

Séance 1

We started by deciding to go back to glass moving again to get the evening going.  It took a while to get going, I could feel an energy building up, but it wouldn't move.  I was getting the feeling that it wasn't moving as we were asking for Alfred and any of his relatives etc. to come through.

After a while the glass would move across the table quite slowly whenever mustard gas was mentioned (the reason for Alfred passing over), but the glass wouldn't move back to the centre of the table, only half way.  In my experience if spirit wants to communicate through the glass they can move the glass straight back to the centre and use more energy.  There was just something not quite right about this one.

One of the members of the circle also experienced feeling very dizzy with a lot of heat also across the back of the neck.  We tried moving places to see if it was the seating position, but this followed the member and although felt a bit better didn't leave until later.

After half an hour we stopped for a short break.

Séance 2

We started off again with the glass moving but we were having the same sort of half hearted results as before.  For some reason I didn't feel that this was right.  The person who had experienced the physical feelings on the last session also had a strong feeling of aggression and wanting to shout out, also feeling very sick.  With this in mind and my feelings I decided that we should stop again and clear the air - everything felt very heavy.

After switching on the lights and having a bit of a breather, we decided to switch to table tilting to  change the atmosphere.  I also asked my guides to do some cleansing around the room. With the heaviness lifted we decided to ask someone to come through and move the table.  After a short while the table shot across the room.  It then also moved across the other side to indicate another person with us.  Over the next half an hour we had constant communication with relatives to someone in the circle; with the table moving around the room, to certain people and spaces, and also tilting onto 2 legs.  This was wonderful connections, but there was also some sort of connection to the name Mary and mustard gas.

Conclusion

From a strange start and not such good feelings with the glass moving, once we had cleared the room and started with table tilting everything became much more positive and better.

Once again we had no connection with Alfred or his family, but we did however have connections to the character to start the movement with the mustard gas (something which doesn't appear to be connected to the actual relatives) and also the name Mary.

More and more we appear to be not getting the character formed, but certain bits of information from the character being used to invite others into the circle.

Another very interesting evening.

The Final Conclusion

This has proved to be a very interesting experiment, with lots of changes over the passing weeks.  The group created quite a strong bond as we came together and got to know more and more about each other.  I believe this was not only an experiment but also a learning experience for each of us involved.

We came together as a group of individuals who didn't really know each other.  We had all be associated through various means, but none of us had known the other 3 in the group previously.  With this in mind, and with a whole range of viewpoints we gelled very well. We all got along and were very open to each others ideas and beliefs.

When we created the character at the beginning we all had some input, apart from one person, who joined at session 2.  I believe each of us bought something very special to this group.

One person had sat in a physical circle and been involved in a number of paranormal investigations previously so had a lot of experience of séances, another had been involved in some investigations and only done séances with glass moving.  The other member had not been involved in anything at all apart from a couple of sessions with a spirit board with some friends; and I was just starting out as a working medium, although still only looking at it as more of a hobby.  From my experiences I was used to talking to spirit and connecting, but not so much in the séance conditions.

By the end of this experiment I think each of us received some proof of 'something out there'! With table movement, glass movement, taps and raps, lights, apports, and the coins being moved on the very last session there was definitely some things happening. I think each of us experienced physical touches, dizziness, breezes and temperature changes during the course of the experiment as well.  Some of us also experienced very personal involvement when loved ones appeared to try and make connections as well.

With regards to Alfred Smith, we never once received communication from him, or any of his family or friends.  What was very interesting was that certain aspects from his character and life which we had created seemed to trigger off a connection for something to happen. 

For example :-

1.  It was the date of 1898 which started the connection with the young boy.  We received a  

     5p which just fell out of nowhere onto the floor and following that we went through a stage

     of discovering 5p's in all sorts of places!  When we did eventually get talking to him via the

     glass and the table (following on from raps and taps) we did establish that 5 was his age, he

     was born in 1989 (the same year as Albert) and lived in the local area (Alfred was meant to 

     have lived in the house we were using for the experiment).

       After we had talked to this boy and moved him onwards with his dad, we no longer

     received the 5p's!

2.  The name Mary was the catalyst for the connections not only with one sitter, but two!

3.  Mustard gas was a definite catalyst during one séance, which we still don't know exactly 

     why as we had to shut the circle down.

It certainly seems to me that to create a connection with a fictional character takes a lot of time, work and commitment.  Although I do think that over time a dedication this must be able to be created through the mind - it certainly appears to be much easier to make a connection with a spirit entity who is either connected to a sitter or in need of some assistance, or who has the need to communicate with one of the sitters.

With my experience of glass and table moving, it has always been quite easy to make a connection and get some sort of movement when asking for anyone to come and communicate who feels the need to, whereas getting everyone to focus on a particular character does not create the same results at all.

It is up to you to decide if you believe the communications we received came directly from the spirit world, or were the creation of the mind, but I can say that the details and information we received turned out to be about 90% correct.  What was even more interesting was the fact that the glass over the last 3 sessions would only move to one person in the circle, and just stay there.  Just before the final session this person found out that a friend of theirs had passed to spirit and much of what we had received matched exactly to this friend.  It was only once this was known that true communication was then established and even more confirmation was established.

I truly believe from this experiment that a connection directly with spirit is much easier and simple that trying to invent someone and the mind creating the phenomenon.  I have also learnt that if there is something which matches to the spirit, either a name, place date or fact, that the connection can be stronger and draw the person to communicate with the sitters.
